Greetings on Australia Day in 2010. We have taken the time to put down our tasting glasses, to briefly discuss a very for an important issue. Please read on.
We have noted with alarm, the Rudd Government’s plans to introduce legislation into the Australian Parliament this year which, if approved, would enforce a mandatory filter of all Internet traffic at the ISP level throughout Australia.
Aussie Wine Guy wholeheartedly supports the No Clean Feed and Anti-Censorship initiatives and believes that any mandatory Internet filtering would be both over zealous and ineffective. We do not support the Government’s planned legislation and believe that the country, as a whole, should come together in denouncing what is amongst other things, prominently a risk to free speech, and almost certainly an invitation to unregulated and/or unsubstantiated censorship.
Given the importance the Government has attached to modernizing Australia's broadband network (the National Broadband Network), pursuing a policy that can only slow down and increase the costs of home Internet access seems misguided at best.
Australian households are diverse, and most do not have young children, so mandating a one-size-fits-all clean feed approach will not serve the public well. Aussie Wine Guy doesn’t think it is the Government's role to decide what's appropriate for him or his family, and neither do most Australians.
Given the amount of Internet content available, the Government will never be able to classify it all and filters will always result in an unacceptable level of over-blocking. AWG feels that the time and money could be spent in better ways both to protect Australian children and improve Australia's digital infrastructure. Australian parents need better education about the risks their children face online.
Trying to rid the Internet of adult content is futile, and can only distract from that mission.
Yours Sincerely,
Aussie Wine Guy
