Last month we opened a bottle of the 1999 D’Arenberg Ironstone Pressings. We’ve actually been storing the ‘99 for about five years (or so) and it was with some anticipation that we decanted it for a special dinner. The ‘99 was a fine drop, with a very delicate and sweet bouquet. The smooth finish was complimented by a tannin and current taste, accentuated with subtle fruits. We really, really love the way D’Arenberg...

Greetings on Australia Day in 2010. We have taken the time to put down our tasting glasses, to briefly discuss a very for an important issue. Please read on. We have noted with alarm, the Rudd Government’s plans to introduce legislation into the Australian Parliament this year which, if approved, would enforce a mandatory filter of all Internet traffic at the ISP level throughout Australia. Aussie Wine Guy wholeheartedly supports the No Clean Feed and Anti-Censorship initiatives an...

On New Year’s Eve, 2009, Aussie Wine Guy and company were celebrating the start of a new decade in Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province) in China. We were partying down at a wine bar, counting down the New Year and finishing a bottle of Yarra Valley’s Train Trak (2004) Pinot Noir. The ‘04 is typical of Yarra Valley Pinot with a sweet and pleasing aftertaste and a subtle, light texture. The bouquet is soft, lingering you have to admire the craftsmanship. Pinot Noir is a tough red to grow an...

Hi Everyone, Today AWG visited our wine storage facility and did stock take (yet again) confirming inventory and we have now updated the lists on the site. What a great day to hang out at a temperature controlled location! Outside it must have been close to 35’C, while our wine is nice and safe, cooled in a refrigerated climate in storage near the inner city of Brisbane. Check out the updated lists! Cheers..AWG

As far as Western Australia goes, Margaret River is the queen of wine producing regions, however this means we sometimes neglect some of the other regions in this beautiful state. West Cape Howe comes to us from the Great Southern region, and is not to be missed. From their website: “West Cape Howe Winesis located approximately 3.5km east of Denmark, a small coastal town located within Western Australia’s Great Southern region. Situated 450 kilometres south of Perth, the coastli...

This year’s anniversary wine was purchased in Paris, France when AWG was on holidays through the French countryside. Given the opportunity, we acquired a very nice (temperature controlled) 2006 Lafite which shall be nurtured carefully over the next decade or more. For those familiar with great Bordeaux first growths, you’ll know that Chateau Lafite is one of the most sought after estates in the region. C...

Two evenings ago we cracked open a bottle of Henchke’s famous ‘Cyril’ label which is a fine Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) blend balanced with a hint of Merlot (15%) and Cabernet Franc (15%) and grown in the beautiful Eden Valley in South Australia, and matured for two years prior to bottling. The wine is, of course, named for the well respected winemaker Cyril Henschke (1924-1979) who pioneered the early Australian wine vintages in the early 20th century. It is one of my favourite Australian ...

Taking a bit of time out from our tour of Bordeaux, here is a quick wine tasting report from the weekend of a vineyard in the Granite Belt in Queensland. On the weekend we resumed the wine trail and drove the short distance to the top of Mt Tamborine and visited with Witches Falls vineyard. They have debuted their 2007 range of Reds and a vast array of their local Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. With Durif still growing, one gets the sense that they are about ready for a real re...
